I was having a conversation today with my wife about things we used to do when were young and how they seemed like the greatest things ever when we were that age. There was one thing we discussed that made me grab the computer and start writing about it on this late Throwback Thursday night. I’m sure a few of you can sympathize with me. Get the slice and relive your childhood with me… Cowabunga!
It’s Saturday morning, you’ve downed your last couple bowls of cereal, and your mom is putting you out to exhaust that sugar rush. What do you do? Bikes? Not today, did that last weekend… Creek? Nah, don’t wanna get wet today and still have that bucket of crayfish in the garage that you didn’t tell mom about. Worms? Uh uh, it’s too dry out and ants are better but that’s so yesterday. What to do? There’s only one thing left to do. Only one thing that can provide the kind of thrill a youth like yourself needs. Trees!
Few things provided the sense of triumph and thrill that climbing a good, low-limb, thick-trunk tree could. It never got old. It was all about eclipsing your last highest point. The tree was your getaway. You could hang out for hours just watching the peons walk by underneath, unsuspecting of your superiority to them in your leafy fortress. It was about picking the right route or risking getting seriously injured and living to tell your peeps about the experience. For extra oompf add water balloons! Ha!
Boy, the times really have changed since those days. Less trees, more sidewalks… Less outside time, more video games… Climbing trees was good ninja practice and it’s unfortunate how many kids will miss out on the fun that ‘getting high on some trees’ provided. Enjoy Throwback clones! Go climb a tree for old times sake.
